SMS (Short Message Service) is a communication system that exchanges short text messages between mobile telephone devices. SMS facilitate the development and growth of text messaging.

The message will be sent to the Short Message Service Center (SMSC) which provides a store-and-forward mechanism. He tries to send messages to their recipients. If the recipient is not reachable, the SMSC queues the message and then try again. Some SMSCs also provides a "forward and forget" option where to start sending messages only once. The best message delivery is a business, so there is no guarantee that the message is actually delivered to the recipient. Delay or complete loss of an unusual message, especially when sending between networks. Users can choose to request delivery reports, which can provide confirmation that the message has reached the intended recipients.

The maximum single text message size is either 160 7-bit characters, 140 8-bit characters, 70 characters or 16-bit.

Greater content (known as "long SMS" or multiple or segmented SMS) can be sent using multiple messages, in this case each message will start with a header containing the user data segmentation information. Long messages are often referred to as the equivalent of several SMS messages.
